Welcome! This year's race will start on April 25. We have already heard from a few of you who want to try your luck paddling down the Waccasassa River. We had a great turnout this past April with some really nice prizes. We expect to make some minor changes this year. We hope everyone enjoyed the "I Survived..." Photo Shoot. We didn't do too bad but we expect to raise even more monies for LARC this year by getting more people involved in the photo shoot.

THE RACE BEGINS APRIL 26!!

You are invited to compete in The Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race Saturday, April 26, 2008! Our optional weather date this year is Saturday, May 3. Registration begins 8:00 a.m. and ends at 10:00 a.m.. The Race begins at or before 8:30 a.m. or when enough racers are present to put into the river. Proceeds benefit the Levy Association for Retarded Citizens (LARC) and is sponsored by the AMVETS Post 88 of Bronson, Florida.

THE CLASSES

This year, as you can see, we have added a few more classes, i.e. Parent-Youth and Senior (55+). We also have added 3rd place to each category to give more folks a chance to win. We will have a better system for calculating racing times this year and there will be a board for each division with times.

Experienced
Kayak (1 man) This is the only class for kayaks!
Mixed Class
Novice [1st time racers only]
Parent-Youth (under 18)
Senior (55+)
2-man Kayak
Women’s Class

If someone in your canoe is experienced, you MUST race in the experienced class and NOT the novice class.

Each racer will receive a bottle of water, a race T-shirt and a food wrist-band. If you lose the wristband you will have to pay for your lunch. No replacements will be given.

Prizes
This year's prizes are:
1st place: a week's stay at Westgate Villas in Kissimmee, FL (one mile from Disney)
2nd place: A GPS navigation system
3rd through 6th place: $100 Wal-Mart gift certificates

Also, throughout the day there will be lots of raffles drawn for various prizes. Raffle tickets will be sold on site for all prizes. The main prizes will not be drawn until all racers have completed the course. Remember you do not have to be present to win!

Ticket sales for the main prizes will start the end of January. Our members will be selling all over the Levy county area or you can call the AMVETS Post 88 at 486-1642 for information on where you can purchase your tickets.

Photographs

New: This year, we will be taking photographs at the start of the race (by our Wild Hog sign) and at the finish line (when you come over the log). We will not be processing the photos on-site, but you will be able to see how your photos will look at our "sampler" table where you can sign up to purchase your photo(s) at the end of the race.Your photos will be posted online, with your permission (see registration form add-on), and you can choose which photos you would like us to process through a phone call, email, or by filling out a form at the finish line.

Your photos will be processed and placed in a nice Wild Hog "photo folder" and mailed out to you in approximately 10-15 days after the race. It's a fun way to remember the race.

New: Additional Photo-Op of: "I Survived the Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race" billboard cut-out. See photo below.

You will have an opportunity to have your photo taken at our "carney" wild hog cut-out board where you face and/or your team mate's face will be replaced with the wild hog's face through the cut-out of "I Survived the Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race." You will be asked to sign a release form (see registration form) allowing us to put the photos online).

Rules and Important Information

Location: Start at State Road 24 at the Waccasassa Bridge 2 miles east of Otter Creek. State Road 24 will be clearly marked with "wild hog" signs.

Finish Line: U.S. Highway 19 at the Waccasassa Bridge, 6 miles south of Otter Creek (State Road 19).

You will drop off your canoe/kayak at the start line (SR 24), and drive your vehicle down to the finish line (turn left when you get to Hwy 19/south). There will be someone in charge of parking to tell you where you can park your vehicle. You will be then bussed back to the start line.

This 15-mile race has been called the "roughest, wildest, trickiest, most challenging, a real obstacle course, no other race like this one." Even if you're not fast, you'll still have a good time. The fastest race times EVER are from 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

Most races are on straight, wide open rivers, but the Waccasassa River averages 15-20 feet wide with twists and curves, one right after another, 20-30 log crossings, cypress knees, rapids and shallows, low-hanging limbs and all the other canoeists trying to reach the finish line before you do. (Obstacles may vary depending on rain fall)

Day of race, all racers will receive a Wild Hog tee shirt, a bottle of water, and an armband. DO NOT lose the armband, as this is your "free" meal ticket. Each racer will receive a confirmation postcard of their entry into the race. However, if you have an email address, we can confirm via email.

Please note on your entry form your shirt size: S, Med, Large, XL,2XL or 3XL.
This way we can get the right size shirt for you. There are no "youth" shirt sizes.

This year there will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each class!

Rules
(Please read carefully as there are a few changes from last year)

1. Novice* and Women's class boats** must be no longer than 17'6" with no minimum width. Straight shaft paddles only in the above classes. Boats are to be factory stock.

2. Experienced class boats shall be factory stock. Bent shaft paddles are allowed in this class. Experienced competition paddlers are expected to enter this class.

3. All racers MUST have PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) on board and must be on board at finish line to be official. No PFDs, No Race.

4. All boats and racers MUST cross over the last log in sight of finish line between ribbons. One-minute penalty each for not crossing. All racers MUST BE IN THEIR BOAT when the boat crosses the finish line.

5. All entrants will be requested to sign an insurance waiver at the registration table, and those under the age of 18 MUST have a parent present at the start of the race to sign a consent form. Notary available on race day.

6. Each racer will get a T-shirt, bottle of water, and food wristband; no replacements will be given if the wristband is lost. You will turn in your wrist band for your meal.

7. You and your boat MUSTstay in the water at all times. You may have to portage your boat over and under objects, but at no time shall you leave the waterway or take a shortcut over land. This is an honor system.

8. NO ALCOHOL IN BOATS OR AT START OR FINISH LINE WHATSOEVER!!!

Amvets Post 88, Bronson, Florida is looking for sponsors for the upcoming Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race, to take place April 26, 2008 along the Waccasassa River. This annual race supports our disabled citizens of Levy County, namely the Levy Association for Retarded Citizens. We strongly believe in this project and hope that you will too.

For your donation of $200.00, as a sponsor, you will receive a free Wild Hog Race pocket shirt with free advertisement of your business on the back of the shirt. You will also receive a replica canoe paddle with your business name on it as well as a free entry into the race, if you wish to sponsor a racer(s).

The LARC (Levy Association for Retarded Citizens) was organized in 1976 by the concerned citizens of Levy County. ARC has aimed to furnish the men and women we serve with programs and services that will provide real life training and skills. These skills are stepping stones that will enable the consumer to live their lives with dignity and self respect--qualities of lifewhich everyone deserves.

LARC contributes the program's success to a dedicated Board of Directors, Executive Director, staff and the many volunteers.

The mission is LARC is to empower the mentally challenged individuals we serve with the ability to choose and realize their own goals, promote their strengths through education and advocacy with the support of families, friends, and the community. The program reaches out to teach these individuals the daily living skills that will allow them to function to their best possible level, protect them from basic life dangers, and promote self worth.

The Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race helps LARC financially to keep their program running to promote awareness in our community. The AMVETS supports this program in a positive manner by hosting and encouraging support from businesses in the community.

The Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race is hosted by AMVETS Post 88 in Bronson, Florida. We welcome anyone who would like to try their luck at paddling down the Waccasassa River over obstacles big and small for a chance to win some really nice prizes, and for prizes drawn throughout the race on U.S. 19, where the party starts with great food and music.

We hope to see some new faces and to visit with racers from past years. We are going to make this an even better event than our 30th, although that will be tough to beat!

The undersigned, as the legal parent/guardian of _________________________ (racer) who is a contestant in the Wild Hog Canoe Race to be held on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. (please check in one hour prior to race) on the Waccasassa River, hereby give my permission for him/her to participate in the race.

I further acknowledge and affirm that I have been told that the race may be dangerous to the racer and/or their property. I consent to his/her participation and agree to assume all risk of injury to him/her and their property as a result of participation in the race.

I further agree to release the AMVETS Post 88 of Bronson, Florida and any of their agents, employees or any individuals working with the race from all responsibility and liability arising from damage or injury to the racer or his property.

I further authorize the Wild Hog Canoe officials to use their discretion in the event of injury and to transport racer to a medical facility, and I will be responsible for all charges incurred as a result thereof.
